We are looking for a Senior Product/Process Development Manager (SPD Manager), based at our Boksburg site, and reporting to the Research & Innovation Director.

Developing and driving, in collaboration with the marketing function, an innovation pipeline that is based on consumer and market understanding
Managing a team of product developers and product technologists

This position involves strong collaboration with internal cross functional teams, external suppliers, as well as the Danone R&I community World Wide. The individual in this role must be able to strongly represent R&I interest within the company during all projects.

The responsibilities of the SPD Manager include:
The timely delivery of innovation, renovation and productivity projects, starting from SELECTION through to IMPLEMENTATION in our factories
The post-LAUNCH follow up, always ensuring product superiority on shelf.

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate a strong ability to lead a team, including the coaching and building of team capabilities in new product and process development, as well as project management. S/he must be able create the right conditions for people to grow and succeed, through inspirational leadership engagement and effective career growth and development planning. S/He must be able to drive an effective prioritization exercise before projects allocation

The SPD Manager will also be responsible for
Developing, together with the Marketing teams, an innovation (1-3 year) pipeline for the Brands s/he is responsible for.
Developing, in collaboration with the Operations function, a productivity projects portfolio.
Managing, together with cross functional teams, complex PRODUCT innovation/renovation, and productivity projects, using STAGE GATE PROCESS methodology, from SELECT to CLOSURE.
Translating consumer and user needs and expectations into product/formulation briefs
Delivering, in line with consumer expectations (drive product attribute definition vs consumers expectations), timing and costs, a portfolio of projects for which s/he is responsible
Delivering first-time-right on shelf products thanks to a robust technical risk assessment approach and strong collaboration with supply chain and Quality departments, as well as own technical know-how
Own and Drive technical feasibility studies in the case of potential breakthrough innovation projects.
Managing together with Operations team the Make or Buy, and/or CAPEX investments decisions
Developing and managing collaborations with suppliers in order to harness their potential to bring in outside ideas and technical solutions
Improving working processes (ways of working) within the R&I team as well as between R&I and other functions
Networking with global R&I community to share and bring in best practices

Master’s Degree in Food Science or closely related field.
8+ years’ experience in a related field.
5+ years in team management with a solid track record of people development and delivery
Strong technical background (dairy ingredients, fermentation, processing, Long shelf Life), complex Industrial trials experience
Knowledge of and ability to apply food science and/or processing principles to product development.
Project management skills and ability to lead projects through all phases from SELECT to CLOSURE
Solid Dairy Science knowledge and working experience required for this role
Knowledge in the use of sensory and consumer testing for qualification of concepts for innovation/renovation.
Expertise in the understanding and application of ingredient science (specifically dairy science), emulsions and required manufacturing processes
Demonstrated analytical, problem-solving skills and strategic thinking.
Excellent documentation and organization skills with attention to detail and ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects.
Experience with food safety, HACCP and quality regulations and programs required.
Ability to work under pressure with strict deadlines in a fast-paced team environment.
Strong communication skills and ability to build relationships and work well with cross-functional partners and suppliers.
Strong ability to work in a VUCA environment, and make decisions even in ambiguous situations
Experience in organizing impactful training for teams
Ability to understand and challenge brand P&Ls (Income Statements) and business model equations

Flexibility to travel
Flexibility to work extended hours for trials when required
A strong team player
